Where Is The Star Leading You Away From?

And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and nashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:50

Over two thousand years ago humanity was finally given some direction. A star pointed to a place in Bethlehem where God sent to the world a Savior, His Son, to point us into the direction of eternal life. The curse of sin was, and is, still on this world, but we have been given a rare gift. It is our choice to receive or refuse, but it is the gift of eternal life. It is a gift, because it was freely given and it was first introduced to us by the simple sign of a star leading people to that gift. In the scriptures we are told the ones that followed that star for at least two years were wise men. Today, we should consider those that choose not to follow that star, if those that follow it are wise, what should we consider those that go the other direction to be (hint: the opposite is foolish). (Don’t come down on me, this is Scriptural).

We were given a star to follow, but we decide to go the other direction – just what should we expect?

In hearing people talk, rich or poor, if they are going the opposite direction and follow a different star they will wind up having a pretty miserable end of life. It is a Scriptural promise this will happen. Instead of a promise of eternal life, there is a promise of eternal suffering in Hell. I have heard the scoffing of those that do not believe in Hell, but it is a fact that you or I cannot change. How do I know this? There is one glimpse given to us in Luke 16:19-31:

“ There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in the flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

It is a grim thing, this glimpse of hell. I am not sure what these torments will be, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could be constantly on fire, but never dying. To have so much pain, to have a color television screen constantly on, constantly reminding you of what you missed out on in Heaven. To know that you are in torment and now, also having the extra burden of not being able to tell your family, who are on the same path as you to turn around and follow the star that you refused to follow. Eternal pain, eternal sorrow. Eternal, forever, from now on with no ending, only the thoughts of what you should have, and could have done differently. Hell. Does this really sound like a wise direction to go in?

What happens to you if you decide on following a different route, a different star? Let’s explore that a little in another post.
