“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,” Luke 2:13-14
I got to thinking one day about the angels singing at the birth of our Savior. Can you just imagine a host of angels singing? Perfect beings, created by God himself, in a chorus announcing the birth of Christ here on earth. How would it have sounded? How does perfection sound? We tout all sorts of singing and singers here on earth. We say this one or that one has a beautiful voice. Everyone on earth has different tastes – country, rock, gospel, opera. The thing is though, we are here on earth and nothing is perfect. So, it is hard to imagine what perfection sounds like.
Were there other recorded instances of the angels singing? I mean, if you are in Heaven – in a perfect place – wouldn’t you be singing a lot? Do Scriptures not record any more instances of angels singing? Looking through the concordance, I did find a few more places where there is a record of the angels singing:
“Praise ye Him all His angels; Praise ye Him, all His hosts!” – Psalm 148:2
“Bless the LORD, you His angels, that excel in strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His word!” – Psalm 103:20
Those are the records that we have of the angels as they sang, and in those records, in Psalm and in Luke, the angels are singing of their creator. God is the reason for the songs of the angels.
So, we have instances that have happened where the angels were singing and they were singing of God and His attributes. Are these all the instances that we have of the angels singing? They sang in Psalm of praise to the creator, and then in Luke they sang praise to the fact the Messiah had come in human form to bring salvation to all mankind.
The Bible is a book of poetry, it is a book of history, science, but most of all it is the book that points us to God himself, in the past, and in the future. The Bible records the future. I am sure the angels are singing praises to God in Heaven as I type this, but the next recorded passages of the angels singing are in the future, and in the future the angels again are singing praises to the creator!
At the end of time, God is looking for someone that is worthy to open the book that judges all. In announcing the One who is worthy, the angels start singing again!
“And when he had taken the book, the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials of odours, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by the blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nations; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests; and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders; and the number of them was then thousand time ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;” Revelation 5:8-11
“And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Revelation 5:13
“And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation 7:11-12.
Those are the upcoming songs of the angels, and if your read on in Revelation, everyone in Heaven is singing and praising our Creator.
In this Christmas season, you can listen to your carols, and your cantatas, and the awe inspiring Hallelujah Chorus. You can hear all these beautiful sounds – and when you do – remember to tell yourself that although these things are marvelous, wonderful, amazing, and, well – just great!!
