I wrote an article awhile back about common sense, and where has it gone. I am going to retract a little on that statement this go-round. Everyday common sense is still a good thing, but I think sometimes that we, as conservative Christians have begun to believe that we have a monopoly on common sense. We are so sure that it is only we that have common sense that we have grown very prideful of the fact that we are the only ones left with common sense. Where does pride lead? It can lead to a down fall.
Christ came into this physical world to prepare us for eternal life. What did Christ say to Nicodemus in John 3:3-7 – “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, an be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
Tell me Christian, how would a person that does not know Christ view this passage? Correct – an unsaved individual would think this to be pretty much babbling on our part. To an unsaved person – this is not common sense!
We, as Christians, are living a life in this world, but we are not of this world. To an unsaved person – this is more babbling. They do not know what it means, as they are seeing things through secular eyes, and not spiritual eyes.
Where we have been led by the Spirit to see things through the eyes of Christ, the world sees us living a life that to them – does not make common sense! When you are talking to an unsaved person and you are trying to speak of the things of God, they do not understand a word you are saying. Remember Charlie Brown’s teacher? Wa, wa, wa, wa, wa! You have a different knowledge than the world and they just do not get it.
Through your life and your testimony an unsaved friend or relative can come to know Christ. Do you recall Peter walking on the water – as long as he kept his eyes on Christ he continued to do the impossible. Only through walking on top of all the things that happen to you in your life do others see you are doing something that is impossible and wonder where this power is coming from. They will want to know just how you are managing walking and staying afloat with all the world is throwing at you. You have to walk through life’s circumstances to be an example to others, but only if you keep your eyes on Christ and keep going. This is not to say you won’t get wet, because we all tend to start looking more at our surroundings and get soaked a lot, but continue turning back toward Christ. Just remember, what makes common sense to you does not look normal to most of the world.

I was sinking deep in sin
Far from the peaceful shore
Very deeply stained within
Sinking to rise no more
But the master of the sea
Heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me
Now safe am I
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me

Without Him, you can do nothing.
