Over two thousand years ago, Christ entered into the city of Jerusalem in a very majestic and triumphant way. His earthly ministry had been very successful; he had healed the sick, and raised the dead. He had given hope to everyone that was sick of the current state of the land. The people were ready to take him off of the donkey he was riding and crown him king. You can read about it in Luke 19:28-35:
“And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethpage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, Saying, “Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. And if any ask you, Why do ye loose him? Thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.” And they went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? And they said, The Lord hath need of him. And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen; saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.”
In less than a week, that all changed. The Pharisees and leaders of the temple were worried. If this man came in and tried to change things, tried to make himself king, the powerful government of Rome would come down upon them. Any power or prestige they had would be lost. Something had to be done about it. In a kangaroo court session, the Saducees brought in false witnesses against Jesus, certifying the charges. People who had been in the throngs on the day of the triumphant entry into Jerusalem were now rising up against him.
“And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. – – -Luke 23:1
“And they all cried out at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) – Luke 23:18-19
“But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.” – Luke 23:21
“And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.” Luke 23:23
“But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.” – John 19:15
Have you ever thought about it? Are you as fickle as this crowd? Do you go along with whoever is in charge just because they are in charge and you don’t want to rock the boat? If you had been in that crowd, would you be one of the ones crying “Crucify him!”? Take a moment and reflect, do you, today, follow crowds who continually try to erase Christ from existence? World leaders of today are still trying to do that. Step away from that crowd and be one of those getting ready for the majestic and triumphant return of our Lord! Soon, and very soon.
