Follow that Star! (Reprise)

Ok, you just bought that beautiful nativity set. It is gorgeous. Everything looks perfect. Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepherds, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, wise men…(screeching halt here). Wise men? Just why do we see wise men in all nativity scenes. It took almost two years for the wise men to find the baby. Wandering around all thru the wilderness for years, looking for the promise of the Messiah, but having trouble getting there. Too busy looking up; too busy to look out; too busy following that star.

If you read the Matthew account of the birth of Christ (chapter 2 of Matthew) you see where Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with the baby because the angel of the Lord warned Joseph that Herod was out to kill the babe. It had been long enough since the baby was born that they were now in a house instead of the manger. It had been that long that the wise men had been seeking the child. I do not think anyone actually knows the time frame there. I have been told two years at least, but that is speculation, so let’s just say it was awhile.

The shepherds found Christ right away. It took the wise men at least two years to find him. There are some people like the shepherds, they immediately found and worshiped Christ. There are also, those of us, who think we are pretty smart (wise men) who look and look and it takes us forever to find Christ, to actually realize who He is.

It is a very good thing that there are those who can find the LORD right away, I admire that; I am in awe of that. I know a good many people who seem to have all the answers figured out. How does that work anyway? How are you born knowing all the correct answers? All I can say is, “good for them!”

You know what? There are those of us who search and search. It seems like there are no answers. It takes us a good while to catch on. The wise men were following a star. How is it possible for us thick skulled people to catch the fact that the light has already come, that the answer to all our problems came over 2000 years ago. That the baby came, that the baby grew up, that the man lived a sinless life, that the man suffered persecution, was beaten with a cat-o-nine tails with jagged bones attached to it, was nailed with huge spikes to a cross-beam of a couple old trees, that was placed in a tomb. How do we see that? Is that where we see events end? At the tomb?

Wait a minute. The story does not stop there. On the third day the grave burst open and out He came. He is alive! Because of that we can do the same! We can live forevermore!

So, was that the problem? Did you stop at the cross? Or, at the tomb? You were supposed to keep looking. You were supposed to look for the light, follow the star. There He is. He is high and lifted up!

Be a wise man. Keep following that star!
