Fearing The Unknown

How Can I Fear

by Ron Hamilton

When shadows fall and the night covers all

There are things that my eyes cannot see.

I never fear, for the Savior is near.

My LORD abides with me!

When I’m alone and I face the unknown

And I fear what the future may be,

I can depend on the strength of my Friend!

He walks along with me.

Jesus is King! He controls every thing!

He is with me each night and each day.

I trust my soul to the Savior’s control;

He drives all fear away!

Chorus:

How can I fear? Jesus is near!

He ever watches over me!

Worries all cease; He gives me peace.

How can I fear with Jesus?

Those are beautiful words. The trouble is, when things come along, our feeble mind starts to fear. We start to worry. Why is that? Why can we not control our fears? Why do they keep cropping up? The short answer is – it is the same problem that the Apostles had when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. We are not watching. We are not praying. We are not in the Word.

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”              Matthew 26:41

We are in the process of selling our house. It shouldn’t be a big deal, but the trouble with that is – at the moment, we have no place to go once it sells! That may not seem like a big deal to you, but to us the worry train has left the station! My wife and I both have been having trouble sleeping. We cannot get it off the brain. We are getting older and we have to get out of debt, so we sell the house and get something smaller and/or cheaper. That sounds like it should relieve stress, but the process!!! Oh, the process!!! We keep trying to pray about that and I think it, but the constant searching makes you crazy, or, crazier!

What is God’s will here? What should we do? Stay local, or move halfway between our children’s families. Praying about it. Will our house sell? Will we have to do 100 things once the inspection is done that will make it too expensive to go through the finished process? Praying about it.

I am writing this to let you know that we, along with all of you, even though we are saved through the precious blood of Christ, we continue to worry just like everyone else. We have the human nature. We, by nature, do what comes naturally. I am writing to remind myself, my wife, my family, my family in Christ – Stop it!! Stop worrying!!

We all do it. The disciples did it at the Garden of Gethsemane. Our human nature overrides our spiritual nature constantly. We fail, we fall. Adam and Eve failed, Abraham failed, David failed, the disciples (the very ones who walk with Christ (which includes us)) failed. The question we have to keep asking ourselves is, how can I fear? If you keep asking though, remember you are still communicating. So really, why do we fear?

How can I fear? Jesus is near!

He ever watches over me!

Worries all cease; He gives me peace.

How can I fear with Jesus?
