My guess? It is a symptom of the end times, but common sense seems to have left the atmosphere altogether. I look around at all that is going on and just have to shake my head in amazement at the very educated people that are running the country (and the world) that seem to be devoid of any practical common sense. I can only presume that this is the part where the Bible says “thinking themselves to be wise they became fools” – Romans 1:22.
I want to say that this happened in my lifetime, but since the people running everything are mostly a little older than me I can only assume it started before I came on the scene.
I was watching some nostalgia television the other day – an episode of The Best of Groucho Marx. The questions that he asks the contestants are like something from Jeopardy – very hard. Groucho was even asking some questions about the Bible, and the contestants actually knew the answers! This episode was filmed before I was born. Imagine that – a majority of a studio audience in Hollywood that knew the answers to questions about the Bible! I have seen episodes of Jeopardy where the category was the Bible and the contestants were skunked by the entire column!
I have just seen that the stimulus from the government has been scheduled into our account. The government is broke, but politicians give us money that is not there, and give even more money to other countries that we definitely do not have, and on top of that, they give themselves another pay raise?????? Where is the common sense? Not only will we not have a balanced budget but I doubt very seriously (if the Lord tarries) that the budget will ever be balanced in my great grandchildren’s lifetime!
So, here is where we stand – politicians and other powerful people pooling together to create some sort of utopian society where everyone shares everything. No middle class anymore, just the very wealthy and then the worker bees that do everything and share everything. Sort of like what Hitler was trying to do back in the 1930-40’s, but this time it is on steroids because they are getting everyone on board. This time it will work. This time we know what we are doing. Even though it has failed time and time again thru history – this time it is going to work!
Where is the common sense people? When society rejects God, that is where it starts. I will begin back in the 1960’s, since that is where I can remember from – we started by throwing God out of the public school system. Since we had become so educated and able to take care of ourselves, we assumed we no longer needed Him (or anything He stands for). That is where I think the snowball really started picking up steam downhill. A people without God are a people without wisdom, which is really common sense if you only think about it for a bit. If you do not have God, you do not have a guide, it is like a compass with a broken needle – you are ultimately just guessing about which direction you should be heading in.
The Bible is THE BOOK of common sense. I am going to leave you with some of the most practical verses I have read lately – about a people that reject God and what happens in the end – 2 Thessalonians 2:2b-12:
“…as that day of Christ is at hand.”
“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;”
“Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
“Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?”
“And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.”
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be take out of the way.”
“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:”
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,”
“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish;
because they received not the love of the truth, that they should believe a lie:”
“That they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip together. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke, quite startled, and nudged his friend awake. He said, “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”
Watson looked up and replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.”
“What does that tell you?” asked Holmes.
Watson responded, “Astronomically, it tells me there are billions of stars and potentially millions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Aero logically, I observe that the time is half past three. Theologically, I can say that God is all-powerful, and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I can tell that it’s going to be a nice day. Why, Holmes? What does it tell you?”
Holmes was silent for a moment, and then spoke. “Watson, you idiot, someone has stolen our tent!”

Society has clearly lost its collective mind. Very few know how to think anymore. We only know how to listen, consume, and regurgitate information. When someone begins questioning the logic of the rhetoric automatically they become conspiracy theorists. Nothing is worse than being a conspiracy theorist. You might as well put on your tinfoil hat and lock yourself in your padded cell you crazy crazy person. It doesn’t matter what they are saying, if they are a scientist or expert they must be believed. Science takes precedence over everything. Science says there are innumerable possibilities for gender. We must believe it. Science says the earth is millions of years old. Who are you to deny the almighty gods of science? Science says abortion is not murder, it must be believed.
Once we’ve accepted that Scientists and Experts are the new god, common sense in any form is completely lost. Scripture tells me that God alone is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. I don’t care how many scientific studies agree with one another that gender is a social construct, my Bible tells me that God created male and female. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. Mark 10:6. My eyes and my brain agree with this verse.
We have stopped worshipping the Creator, and begun worshipping the creation. Romans 1:2 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped the creature more than the Creator. The study of God’s creation and the workings thereof (science) have opened up my eyes to the fact that no matter how much I learn I will never be able to understand it all. I have to put my faith in Christ. I am not a “science denier,” but I do understand that science as we understand it will always have limitations.
For some the study of God’s creation and the workings thereof (science) cause them to think they have somehow learned all there is to know about an area. I’m sorry to say that no matter how much you think you know you will never understand it all. You can have all the scientific research and journals in the world at your fingertips and still you will only understand a small drop in the bucket of the vast understanding of this universe that God created, set in motion, and maintains. All that self-righteous arrogance that we hold when we suddenly have some new understanding just makes us look foolish. We need to always realize that we are limited in our understanding, and no matter how much we think we know there will always be more to learn. Even for the “experts.”
I started with a story from Ravi Zacharias, and I want to end with another. He is a very methodical and logical thinker, and I am always blessed when read his thoughts. Maybe this will help us to understand where good old-fashioned common sense has gone.
In the 1950s kids lost their innocence.
They were liberated from their parents by well-paying jobs,
cars, and lyrics in music that gave rise to a new
term—the generation gap.
In the 1960s kids lost their authority.
It was a decade of protest- church, state, and parents were
all called into question and found wanting. Their authority
was rejected, yet nothing ever replaced it.
In the 1970s kids lost their love. It was the decade of me-
ism dominated by hyphenated words beginning with self.
Self-image, self-esteem, self-assertion…It made for a
lonely world. Kids learned everything there was to know about
sex and forgot everything there was to know about love,
and no one had the nerve to tell them there was a
difference.
In the 1980s kids lost their hope.
stripped of innocence, authority, and love; and plagued by
the horror of a nuclear nightmare, large and growing
numbers of this generation stopped believing in the future.
In the 1990s kids lost their power to reason. Less and less
were they taught the very basics of language, truth, and logic
and they grew up with the irrationality of a postmodern
world.
In the new millennium kids woke up and found out that
somewhere in the midst of all this change, they had lost
their imagination. Violence and perversion entertained them
till none could talk of killing innocents since none was
innocent anymore.
